What is Digital Marketing?
Digital marketing is defined by the use of numerous digital strategies, operations and channels to connect with online audience and customers especially due to an observed pattern of increasing online presence by those customers.
After the observation, digital marketers then attempt to conduct their marketing communications via appropriate channels such as: Content Marketing – the creation and promotion of several valuable and high traffic website contents to influence customer buying decisions.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – the process of increasing the amount of organic (or free) traffic/visits your website receives by optimizing your website to “rank” higher in search engine results pages.
Social Media Marketing – involves promoting your brand and your content on social media channels to increase brand awareness, increase traffic, generate leads for your business and sometimes even secure sales. Examples of social media marketing channels include; Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, Google+, etc.
Paid Advertising – while a lot of marketers effectively leverage of free and organic traffic from, others rather prefer to buy their way to the hearts of more traffic and leads by paying for advertisements. Think of paid advertising as your traditional paid newspaper, billboard or radio adverts but this time, online.
Email Marketing – this is probably the oldest form of digital marketing because a lot of traditional marketers have been involved in advertising products and services using direct emails. In this new age, however, email marketing has evolved into a more deliberate, strategic, digital, personalized, automated and mass marketing communication with existing and potential customers.
Online PR – this is the practice of securing earned online coverage with digital publications, blogs, and other content-based websites. It’s much like traditional PR, but in the online space.
What is the difference between Digital Marketing and Traditional Marketing?
Great marketing finds and keep customers. But with so many marketing options, it can be difficult for businesses, marketers and enterprise companies to know how to allocate marketing budget and efforts efficiently.
With increasing online presence and declining TV, radio, magazine, newspaper follower-ship, it is becoming difficult for marketers and businesses to focus on what works best.
Should you go with digital marketing, or stick to the tried and true methods of traditional marketing?
Here, you’ll find how to make a better informed decision on what to focus on.
Traditional marketing has a longer history, unlike digital marketing. It is a well-researched and long established method of getting your message out to the customers.
Things have, however, changed. With increasing online presence, marketing focus has now shifted to online or digital marketing.
Here are individual characteristics…
Traditional Marketing:
Can reach a larger uneducated and tech illiterate audience especially in villages
Cannot target audience groups effectively
No specific targeting options
Cannot personalize advertising
Has little or no tracking channels
Can take a long duration to implement a campaign
Requires huge ad spending and budget is required to execute the campaign
Can generate a positive ROI based on product
Involves static Ads and one Way Communication without feedback
Measuring the campaign results is difficult
Digital Marketing:
Has limited reach compared to traditional media
Has the ability to help marketers qualify their leads
Can target the audience very effectively
Can customize the advertising as per user interest
Can be implemented very fast and easily
Enables free and very cost-effective advertisements
Enables very high return on investment (ROI) compared to advertising cost
Can create highly engaging and interactive ads for 2 way communication and receiving feedback for improvement
Has reporting and tracking channels to measure campaign data and performance
As a case for traditional marketing, in our increasingly digital world, you can count on a growing number of customers to be tech savvy, but there is still a large number of people out there who are not. There are also those who do not have access to the internet at all. For now, traditional marketing still offers your best chance of reaching those people directly.
Although not everyone is tech savvy, and not everyone is online, there are certainly a large majority of people who are. The number of internet enabled households will only grow as time goes on.
Many of these people have some form of internet-enabled device on them at all times. This means you will always have a chance of reaching that customer if you have a sound digital marketing strategy in place.
And with the digital marketing features mentioned above, the sky is the starting point of your marketing performance.
